Day 8 - Denver

"On the road again…"

Greetings from the Mile High City. We spent the morning packing up and driving in to Denver... As you can see, Ashleigh was sad to leave the mountain house.

We arrived in Denver, had pizza at the wonderful Italian restaurant we went to last Saturday, then walked around for about an hour. We also went to the biggest REI ever!

Day 7 - Steamboat Springs

We woke up to a beautiful, sunny, morning with weather in the mid-seventies!

We took this photo in Paula & Keith’s neighborhood as evidence of "the best weather day" of our trip.

We drove to Steamboat Springs, Colorado around noon. Steamboat is a nice little ski town with a river running through it. Just like Aspen, Vail, and Winter Park - things were pretty quiet due to the offseason. We window shopped for about an hour, had lunch on the river, and decided to check out the city’s hot springs. Unfortunately, the rain seems to follow us where ever we go. We ended up skipping the hot springs due to lightning.

Anyhow, Ashleigh is working hard to get the mountain house "ship shape" before we head back to Denver tomorrow afternoon.

As you can see, Ashleigh is a little bummed about going home. ;o)

Day 6 - Lazy Day

Lazy day!

We started off by making breakfast tacos, Ashleigh did laundry and read a book while I watched movie. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, so we decided to take a drive around 2PM. We headed into Winter Park, which is currently abandoned due to the off season. There wasn’t much to do, so we ended up driving to Empire, Colorado. The Garmin said it was 8 miles outside of Winter park, but, it was actually about 25 miles down a winding mountain road!

We stopped at an awesome malt shop that Ashleigh recognized and had ice cream and onion rings. The owner was wearing a Waterloo Records t-shirt and had a Kinky Friedman sign on the wall... Turns out he is originally from Houston, but lived in Austin, and was just there visiting family last week. Small world!

It started snowing while we were on the road, so we pulled over to play in it for a few minutes.

It was sunny again by the time we got back to Granby, so Ashleigh and I went for a long walk.

Tomorrow we’re going to Steamboat Springs. Hopefully we’ll have more exciting things to post on the blog tomorrow night. :)

Day 5 - Rocky Mountain National Park

The sun finally came out today!!!

Jay and I took advantage of the gorgeous weather and spent most of the day outside... I know, I know… When it comes to spending the day in nature, I’m not the most likely candidate. Which is why I think the following photo is both funny and appropriate. :)

Jay and I are really enjoying the mountain house. We are so fortunate to have such a beautiful place to stay with all of the comforts of home. We watched a movie this morning, made breakfast tacos; then drove from Granby through Rocky Mountain National Park, into Estes Park, and back.

It started snowing RIGHT when we stopped at the Continental Divide. It was awesome timing and a very pretty sight.

We stopped at almost every scenic rest stop along the way. Jay read EVERY plaque (I’m not kidding Caren), threw snowballs at me, and laughed at me for falling knee-deep into the snowbanks. This actually happened a lot. In fact, I accidentally fell in waist deep WITH the camera and couldn't get out without help. Oops!

I think the highest we went was an area of Tundra at about 12,000 feet above sea level. It was snowing up there too – and very windy!

We also stopped near a at river near Estes Park. Here we saw an elk (I think) or maybe it was a moose... And then a RAINBOW!!! (what a day)
